Agree on the first use before it arrives
Explain what the device can do using an example your parent chooses: calling a grandchild, having a conversation, or getting help with an everyday task. Ask where they would like it and whether they want anyone else connected. Make clear who is paying and what happens if they decide it does not suit them. An enthusiastic gift giver and a willing user are separate people.
Talk about the camera, microphone, and shared information in plain language. Read the product's current controls and privacy information together, and leave choices open when your parent wants more time.
Prepare the connection and a familiar welcome
Find the home Wi-Fi name and password with the account holder's permission. Check the provider's setup instructions and have its support details ready. For Rhem, reliable home Wi-Fi is required for connected features; there is no cellular connection. Choose a time when someone can help if connecting takes longer than expected.
After ordering Rhem, you can optionally add Wi-Fi details and record a welcome message in My orders to help prepare it before shipping. Ask your parent whether they would enjoy that message. Keep it personal and brief, and avoid including private account information.
Find a place that works for them
Follow the placement and power instructions supplied with the device. Choose a stable surface near where your parent already spends time, with cables arranged away from walkways. Check the screen from their usual seat and try the sound at a comfortable volume. Ask before moving furniture or turning a favorite quiet corner into a place for technology.
Try a short exchange with the room as it usually is. If background sound makes interaction difficult, explore another position or ask support for help. Let your parent decide which location feels comfortable.
Set up family access with permission
Add the contacts your parent wants to reach, using names they recognize. Review what each connected person can see or change. Talk through any updates or notifications: who receives them, when they might respond, and how your parent can ask for access to be changed. Do not promise that a relative will always be watching an app.
- Check contact names and numbers together.
- Review sharing settings before inviting more family members.
- Show how to stop an interaction and where to find the device controls.
- Keep the usual phone and existing ways to get help available.
Let them make the first request
Sit nearby while your parent tries the request they chose. Let them finish, notice where they hesitate, and explain one step at a time if they ask. For a family call, have someone ready to answer and practice ending it as well as starting it. Leave a short note in their preferred format with the request and a contact for help.
Agree on a time to check in after they have had a chance to use it. Ask what they enjoyed, what felt confusing, and whether they want to change anything. Rhem includes one-on-one setup help by phone; use support for unresolved setup questions. Add another feature only when your parent is ready.
